I had the pleasure of playing during the New Orleans annual Jazz Fest on Thursday April, 27Th and 28Th. So much good music goes on during this time in New Orleans that it's hard to get a handle on. But I did catch wind that renowned studio drummer, 77 year old Bernard Purdie, was doing late night set not too far away. My show ended at 1:00 am and his at 3:00 so I it was able to go catch the second half of his set.
I walked in right when he was playing a Steely Dan song that incorporated the famous 'Purdie Shuffle'. If you aren't familiar with the 'Purdie Shuffle', please get acquainted. There are different approaches to it but it's basically a half time shuffle typically with some ghost notes with the left hand on the snare. Here is a link the man himself talking about it.
